Episode 242

  The Fabulous Family Tree

🪔 A Pilgrimage of Compassion and a Journey of Courage

☀️ A Sunday of Smiles

Narrator: Hello! 🙋‍♂️ Hi, everyone! 👋 How is your stunning, shining day?

Mr Mantra 🕉️: It’s Sunday, sir!

Narrator: Ha… ha… a sun-smiling day, isn’t it?

Mr Mantra: Exactly! A sun-shining day, sir! ☀️

Meera: May I ask a spectacular question, please? 🙏

Narrator: How can I help you, Meera?

Meera: Can we judge a person’s character by their interests or by looking at the way they arrange their home?

Narrator: Our surroundings and personal interests may offer clues about our tastes, habits, and priorities. However, we should be careful not to judge someone’s entire character by their home, zodiac sign, or blood group. A person’s true character is better understood through their actions, compassion, honesty, and treatment of others.

Meera: That’s a great answer, sir! We visited Kurinchikumaran Temple 🛕 and heard that its founder was your brother, Thamponna, the author of The Fabulous Family Tree.

Narrator: Why don’t we discuss the author a little?

Mary: Brilliant! I thought you might share that story with us in the future.

Narrator: You read my mind, Mary!

👑 The Periyappa Who Left His Dreams Behind

Mary: Who was your Periyappa, sir? Was he the quiet, strong-minded man who fell in love with a princess?

Narrator: Who?

Sarah: We… we saw her riding a beautiful brown horse in one of the earlier episodes!

Narrator: Ah, yes! He was our father’s elder brother. Unfortunately, he was forced to abandon his pilot training halfway through.

Peter: Why, sir?

Narrator: People questioned why a man from a prosperous family needed to work in the air to earn a living. In their view, he did not need to work to support himself.

Peter: Excuse me, sir! We wonder why your grand father, Mr Sathasivampillai, took his children on a pilgrimage. Was it to encourage them?

Narrator: Pardon, Peter?

Peter: I mean, sir, was it like recharging a weakening battery? Did he want to strengthen their courage and give them renewed energy?

Narrator: Ha… ha… I love the way you express yourself sometimes, Peter!

There is a traditional saying: Those who see Kasi will not be born again.

Christina: What… what does that mean, sir?

🪔 The Pilgrim and the Thirsty Donkey

Narrator: Let me tell you a story.

Once, a deeply pious pilgrim was travelling from Kasi, also known as Varanasi, towards Rameswaram in southern India.

Peter: Oh! We have heard of Rameswaram. It is in India, isn’t it?

Narrator: Certainly! It lies far away, at the other end of the country.

Rudra: Why would someone undertake such a long and difficult journey, sir?

Narrator: The pilgrim was carrying a quantity of sacred water from the River Ganges. His intention was to offer that water to the sea at Rameswaram.

Meera: What a precious offering!

Renuka: But why did he have to carry it all that way?

Narrator: Calm down, everyone! Please listen patiently. You are about to discover the deeper meaning of pilgrimage.

Halfway through his journey, the pilgrim noticed a donkey lying beside the road, close to death.

Its tongue was dry, its eyes were rolling, and its whole body showed the agony of extreme thirst.

Renuka: Oh, dear! You mean the poor animal was dying because it desperately needed water?

Narrator: Exactly!

Renuka: And this happened while the man was on his way to complete his pilgrimage?

Narrator: That’s right. The pilgrim was deeply moved by the suffering creature. Without hesitation, he poured the precious Ganges water he had been carrying into the donkey’s mouth. 🪔

Moments later, the animal began to recover.

Peter: So… did the pilgrim abandon his journey to Rameswaram?

Narrator: Please be polite and patient, Peter! Listen carefully to the real reason behind the pilgrimage, as taught by our spiritual teachers.

Peter: All right, sir! 👌

Seeing what had happened, the pilgrim’s companions questioned him.

“Wasn’t the sacred water you brought from Kasi meant to be offered to the ocean at Rameswaram?”

The pilgrim smiled peacefully, like a saint, and replied:

“I have offered the holy water to the ocean itself. Can you not see?”

Christina: What? How could he say that?

Narrator: He recognised that serving a suffering living being was itself a sacred offering.

His companions were astonished, confused, and surprised.

But the lesson was simple:

“Seva to the suffering Jiva is seva to the Deva.”

In other words, selfless service to a suffering living being is service to the Divine.

Everyone fell silent.

Narrator: Always remain firm in that understanding. Rituals and pilgrimages can be meaningful, but compassion must never be forgotten.

Peter: Then what about the saying, “Those who see Kasi will not be born again,” sir?

Narrator: Ha… ha… that depends on how we understand the teaching. We should not mistake a sacred saying for a guarantee that a journey alone will transform us. We must examine our hearts, our actions, and our willingness to live with compassion rather than follow any belief blindly.

Meera: That is a wonderful lesson, sir!

🌳 The Fabulous Family Tree: A Personal Memory

Sam: Mr Mantra 🕉️, we would love to learn more about The Fabulous Family Tree. Have you or your brother ever experienced something unforgettable?

Narrator: What sort of experience do you mean?

Sam: A time when you helped someone—or when someone helped you.

Narrator: That is a difficult question, Sam!

Sam: Ha… ha… please, sir! We would love to hear a better answer. It sounds like a motivational film, especially as we are preparing for our English examinations!

Peter: That’s right, sir! We are learning to write different kinds of essays.

Christina: Or perhaps you could tell us about the time you met your very best friend?

Rudra: Or even the time you met a bad friend?

Narrator: Which friend? I have many bad friends! Ha… ha… one at a time, please!

Students: Suuuuuuu! 😂

Meera: What about a unique, funny experience or a special family tradition?

Narrator: Oh, be quiet! Ha… ha…!

Sarah: Or a time when you felt truly proud of yourself?

Narrator: Never! Ha… ha…!

Students: Sir, please! 🙏 Tell us about a time you will never forget!

Narrator: Haven’t we already discussed the nineteen-year-old girl who was Thamponna’s sister?

Mary: Yes, sir. But may we ask whether you were permanently separated from your elder sister after that?

Narrator: No, we were not.

Peter: Is Thamponna your own brother, sir?

Narrator: Certainly!

Students: He has made our lives so much lighter, easier, and brighter!

Narrator: And what about me? Ha… ha…!

Sam: Could you tell us whether you met your missing sister again?

Meera: We would also like to know about the time your heart was broken. 💔

💔 A Childhood Journey I Could Never Forget

Narrator: Certainly. It was a difficult experience, students—one that brought me sorrow, confusion, and, eventually, a deep sense of pride.

Peter: Was it a time when you helped someone and got into trouble, sir?

Narrator: No. It was one of the most painful experiences of my childhood, yet I was proud of what I eventually accomplished.

Let me explain.

My youngest sister and I were taken to our elder sister’s house by a young man who had recently become connected to her.

Christina: Why, sir?

Narrator: Our mother had heard that our elder sister was pregnant.

We were both very young, enthusiastic, and innocent. We were overjoyed to see our sister again. In our childish minds, we believed that bringing her home would make the whole family happy.

We were determined to reunite everyone.

Mary: How exciting, sir! You must have been so happy to see her!

Narrator: We certainly were. But our happiness was soon interrupted.

There was an elderly woman in the house—a tall woman with a dark complexion and a powerful voice. She completely refused to let our sister leave with us.

Peter: Why?

Narrator: She spoke harshly, saying that it was wrong to leave a pregnant woman in the company of such young children. She called us foolish children and insisted that we were too young to take responsibility for the situation.

Renuka: Oh, dear! Although her words were cruel, she might have been worried about whether you were old enough to manage everything.

Narrator: Perhaps. But at that age, we could not understand her concerns. We only understood that we wanted our sister to come home and that a stranger’s harsh words had shattered our happiness.

I was two years older than my youngest sister, yet I was still a child myself. My mind became confused, and my legs seemed to decide what to do before I could think clearly.

I simply wanted to walk away. 🚶‍♂️

Meera: Oh, dear!

Narrator: Trying to remain polite, I asked the elderly woman:

“Could I at least walk as far as your beautiful town?”

“No!” she replied in an arrogant voice.

“Just as far as the junction, Grandma, please!”

At last, she agreed.

“All right, but return quickly!”

Narrator: I thanked her. But inside, I had already made a decision.

I wanted to bring my mother to the house. I was worried about the way the elderly woman had spoken to us, and her terrifying tone had broken my heart.

I believed that if our mother came, things might change.

So I began to walk.

And walk.

And walk.

☀️ A Little Boy’s Determination

The journey seemed endless. I walked for more than an hour in the hot weather, and soon I was exhausted, hungry, and desperately thirsty.

My heart was aching. Tears filled my eyes as I searched for some way to reach my mother.

Fortunately, I came across a water well and drank some water to refresh myself.

But there was one serious problem: I did not have a single penny in my pocket.

How could I achieve my mission without money?

Sam: Oh, sir! You were only a little boy, all alone, without even money for the journey!

Narrator: Exactly, Sam. But sometimes a child’s determination can be stronger than the obstacles standing in the way.

I continued walking under the scorching sun. Then, quite unexpectedly, I saw our local girls’ school.

Only then did I realise that I had finally reached a familiar place!

Students: Bravo! 👏👏👏🏆

Narrator: I immediately explained the situation to my mother.

She listened calmly and decided to act. She invited my elder brother, Gunalan, who was especially fond of our sister, to help us.

My brother asked me to walk to the junction and arrange a hired car.

Meera: You must have been delighted!

Narrator: Over the moon! I ran like a jet! ✈️

At the junction, I found our regular driver, who knew our father well.

Soon, I was sitting inside a grey car, and the driver brought us home in what seemed like seconds.

My brother asked our mother to accompany us.

Only then did I realise that this was the best way forward. My mother could speak to the family directly, and I would no longer have to face the situation alone.

🚘 The Return Journey

Our mother welcomed me warmly but firmly warned me to guide the driver to the correct destination.

I sat beside the driver and directed him carefully.

Although I had a doubt in my mind, I did not reveal it to anyone. I guided him calmly, deliberately passing the destination by a few feet.

The driver had to reverse the car.

And there, anxiously waiting for me, was my elder sister!

She had been worried that I might have become lost.

Sarah: Oh, sir! You must have been so relieved to see her!

Narrator: I certainly was!

I proudly presented my mother to my sister. I did not want to hear any more objections. I had accomplished what I had set out to do: I had brought my mother to the very place where she was needed.

Meanwhile, the young man who had taken our sister there returned from work. He entered the house without paying attention to our car.

But the most important thing had already happened.

Our sister immediately accompanied us home.

Students: Hooray! 👏👏👏🏆

Narrator: I was immensely relieved and proud of what I had achieved. A small child, with no money and no proper plan, had managed to find his way to his mother, ask for help, and bring the family together again.

I had been hurt by the elderly woman’s words, but I had not allowed that hurt to destroy my determination.

Meera: Sir, your story teaches us that courage does not always mean being physically strong. Sometimes it means refusing to give up when our hearts are broken.

Narrator: Beautifully expressed, Meera!

Peter: And we should ask for help when a problem is too big for us to handle alone.

Narrator: Exactly, Peter. My mother and brother helped me complete what I could not safely accomplish by myself.

Sam: So, sir, what was the most important lesson you learned?

Narrator: Perhaps this:

“A broken heart may shed tears, but a determined heart can still find its way home.”

And never forget that compassion, intelligence, courage, and family love can work together to overcome difficult circumstances.

Thank you, students, for reminding me of one of the most unbelievable events of my childhood.

Sometimes, the memories that hurt us most also reveal the strength we never knew we possessed.

Hare Krishna! 🙏🪔

Le Narrateur : Tu as deviné mes pensées, Mary !

Mary : Quelle aventure, monsieur !

Alors, je me mis à marcher.

Hare Krishna ! 🙏🪔
