Episode 250

🌳 The Fabulous Family Tree

From the Science of Life to the Legacy of Srirangan 🪔

The Universal University — Divine Education Through Everyday Life

Scene 1: A Beautiful Day and a Serious Question!

Mr Thamponna: Hello, everyone! 🙋‍♂️ How is your day today?

Students: Brilliant! It’s a beautiful day, to be honest. The sun is shining magnificently!

Student: By the way, Mr Thamponna, is there any way to get rid of this ridiculous LDL?

Mr Thamponna: Sorry! Did you say a riddle, Rudra?

Rudra: Ha…ha…! Sir, my sister is only in her twenties, but she has high cholesterol. Please, this is no joke!

Mr Thamponna: Oh, I see! So, she has lower HDL and higher LDL, Rudra?

Rudra: Yeeeees! But she doesn’t eat anything particularly unhealthy or rich in bad fats. Why isn’t that fair, sir?

Another Student: Exactly! My mother has high LDL, too, even though she is a vegetarian. It’s so unfair, sir!

Student: What exactly is cholesterol?

Mr Thamponna: Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is essential for our good health, children. Our bodies need it to build cells and produce certain hormones and other important substances.

Student: Where does it come from?

Mr Thamponna: Our bodies obtain some cholesterol from food, but most of it is produced naturally by our own liver. Our genes, inherited from our parents, can also influence how much cholesterol our bodies produce and how efficiently they remove it from the bloodstream.

Students: We didn’t know that!

Mr Thamponna: When LDL cholesterol becomes too high, it can contribute to fatty deposits building up inside our arteries. Over time, these deposits can narrow the arteries and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Student: Oh, my God! How can we tackle this problem? My mother follows healthy eating guidelines and takes necessary measures, including exercise and avoiding dairy products, but she still cannot lower her cholesterol!

Mr Thamponna: Unfortunately, sometimes genetics plays a significant role. Even people who eat healthily and exercise regularly can have high LDL because their livers naturally produce more cholesterol or their bodies do not remove it efficiently.

Your mother’s efforts are certainly worthwhile. Regular monitoring, medical advice and, when necessary, appropriate medication are important.

And remember, children, worrying excessively won’t solve the problem! Ha…ha…!

We must be prepared not only for our academic examinations but also for the unexpected challenges of life. That is another reason to seek guidance from our Supreme Daddy!

Scene 2: How Does the Sun Keep Shining?

Sarah: Mr Thamponna, how does the Sun survive continuously? 🙏

Mr Thamponna: In fact, Sarah, the Sun has its own extraordinary life process, although it is not a living body like ours.

Sam, can you answer?

Sam: It’s a piece of cake! It’s simply a matter of nuclear fusion!

Sarah: Please, Mr Thamponna, I would still like to hear your explanation!

Mr Thamponna: Oh! Didn’t I tell you that there would be no more scientific inquiries here? Ha…ha…!

Student: You’re talking just like Mr Mantra! Ha…ha…! Surely, you already know the answer!

Mr Thamponna: All right, children. Actually, the basic principle is quite simple.

Sarah: What’s wrong with you, sir? Is it simple science or complicated science, just like cholesterol? Ha…ha…!

Mr Thamponna: Simple, Sarah! Think about how our own bodies function.

For example, don’t we know how our blood cells are continuously produced?

Peter: You mean in our own bone marrow?

Mr Thamponna: One hundred per cent, Peter!

Renuka: Do you mean that the Sun’s enormous, energetic core continuously produces energy through nuclear fusion, just as our bone marrow continuously produces blood cells?

Mr Thamponna: That’s right, Renuka!

The Sun produces energy by fusing hydrogen nuclei into helium under tremendous pressure and temperature. This process releases the energy that eventually reaches our planet as sunlight and warmth.

Student: What is the name of the Sun according to the Vedas?

Mr Thamponna: Vivasvan.

Students: Siiiiir! Please commence our Fabulous Family Tree! 🙏

Scene 3: The Mysterious Legacy of Mr Srirangan

Student: Would you mind telling us about the brother of Mrs Meena Jeyaratna in Colombo?

Mr Thamponna: Why not?

He resembles his handsome father, Mr Gunaretnam, in his height, build and general appearance.

Student: Oh! So he is the son of Mrs Dharmarani Gunaretnam?

Mr Thamponna: Definitely, Durga!

Student: Really?

Mr Thamponna: Absolutely! He is also the brother of Mrs Meena Jeyaratna. At present, he is living in France in a palatial house. 🏠

Student: Interesting! Did he fall in love just as his father did?

Mr Thamponna: Undoubtedly! Ha…ha…!

Students: With whom?

Mr Thamponna: I believe it was Miss Soruba.

Best of all, her family members are highly educated, too.

As an auditor, Mr Srirangan is particularly skilled at examining and monitoring financial affairs. He is also well acquainted with the affairs of his extended family, including those of his beloved’s family.

Student: So, did he end up following the same path as his parents?

Mr Thamponna: No, he is a brilliant young man. He learned valuable lessons from his parents’ experiences. Ha…ha…!

Furthermore, his maternal uncles were exceptionally bright and well-educated men who secured responsible, well-paid positions in reputable organisations, including banks and government institutions.

Student: But he still fell in love, sir!

Mr Thamponna: So what, children? The world has been changing, particularly in its understanding of women’s rights and responsibilities.

Women no longer wish to be confined to traditional domestic roles. They increasingly seek equal opportunities, equal rights and equal responsibilities.

Mr Srirangan recognised the realities and difficulties experienced by his parents.

Students: We don’t quite understand, sir!

Mr Thamponna: Traditionally, in many families in India and Sri Lanka, men were regarded as the principal breadwinners. Consequently, women’s education and professional development were not always given equal priority.

However, being an intelligent and forward-thinking young man, Mr Srirangan preferred a life partner who was equally educated and professionally capable, with equal rights and shared responsibilities.

Students: What a man of principle! We appreciate that, sir. Even our parents are struggling because of some of the outdated and unfair practices in our society.

Student: Where is Mr Srirangan now?

Mr Thamponna: In France.

Students: What? Why did he leave his motherland and give up his well-paid employment, along with his partner’s promising career in Colombo?

Mr Thamponna: Because of politics.

Student: He… he had to flee because he feared threats, just as our parents did?

Mr Thamponna: Exactly, Sam!

Students: What hardship and harassment! Was it because of a lack of enlightenment, or simply because society had not yet been illuminated by the torch of knowledge, Mr Thamponna?

🙏🙏🙏

Student: Wasn’t it difficult for him to leave the country?

Mr Thamponna: One hundred per cent!

Since his mother was related to our family, she compassionately approached our brothers in France and explained the difficult circumstances.

Sarah: Oh! So they helped to make the necessary arrangements to bring him out of that difficult situation?

Mr Thamponna: Certainly, Sarah.

Scene 4: A Miraculous Birth and a Sacred Temple

Students: We never knew all this! But you mentioned that Mr Srirangan was a miraculously born boy. Would you please explain why?

Mr Thamponna: After a long period of waiting, his parents’ first pregnancy ended in disappointment. They experienced great sadness and uncertainty.

Students: And then?

Mr Thamponna: Following their faith, prayers and devotion, they visited the sacred Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam, undertaking a pilgrimage with the hope of being blessed with a baby boy.

Students: Now we understand! So, he was regarded as a miraculous blessing after all those years of waiting?

Another Student: Ohhhhh! Is that why he was named Srirangan?

Mr Thamponna: Hmm…hmm! Exactly!

Students: Yeeeees! We have heard that this magnificent historical temple is extraordinarily sacred!

Mr Thamponna: Certainly, children!

One of the greatest spiritual teachers associated with this sacred temple is Sri Ramanujacharya.

According to traditional accounts, Ramanujacharya entered his final meditative state at Srirangam in 1137 CE, at the age of 120.

Students: What an extraordinary legacy of spiritual knowledge!

Students: We would love to know more about this legacy!

Mr Thamponna: According to the traditional accounts of the Sri Vaishnava community, Ramanujacharya’s departure from this world took place at Srirangam in 1137 CE.

His spiritual presence and teachings continue to inspire devotees even today.

Student: Is its full name the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam?

Mr Thamponna: Exactly!

And there is another remarkable tradition associated with this temple. According to the Ramayana tradition, Lord Rama entrusted a prestigious image of Lord Ranganatha to Vibhishana, who later brought it towards Lanka. The image ultimately became associated with the sacred temple at Srirangam.

Students: What a magnificent connection with the Ramayana!

Mr Thamponna: Indeed! It is one of the most treasured sacred traditions associated with this temple.

Scene 5: The Family Behind the Young Srirangan

Peter: Excuse me, sir! If the entire family had lost or sacrificed their assets, who supported Mr Srirangan’s family?

Mr Thamponna: Pardon me, Peter?

Peter: We mean the two children of Mr and Mrs Gunaretnam when they were young. Who supported them during those difficult times?

Mr Thamponna: Fabulous question!

Fortunately, their mother, Dharmarani, had beloved brothers who held senior positions, including managerial positions in banks.

Students: Oh! So they supported the family?

Mr Thamponna: Obviously!

All right, children, I think we shall stop here for today.

Students: Hold on, please! 🙏 We are delighted to hear about this family and would love to know a little more about them!

Student: What exactly was Mr Srirangan doing in Colombo, sir?

Mr Thamponna: He was working as an auditor for several companies.

Students: Interesting! But surely there is much more to discover about his life!

Mr Thamponna: Ha…ha…! Certainly, children. Every family has a history, every history has a lesson, and every lesson offers an opportunity to understand life more deeply.

To be continued… 🪔

M. Thamponna : Pardon ! Tu as dit une énigme, Rudra ?

Rudra : Ha…ha… !

Un élève : Intéressant ! Est-il tombé amoureux comme son père ?

M. Thamponna : Sans aucun doute ! Ha…ha… !

(Vivasvan).

Episode 249

🌳 The Fabulous Family Tree

The Purpose of Human Life — From Family History to Supreme Science 🪔

The Universal University — Divine Education Through Everyday Life

Scene 1: Wake Up, Dear Students!

Mr Thamponna: Hey there, dear students! Wake up! Have a wonderful day, everyone! Isn’t it a miracle that our sacred souls have been given the opportunity to experience life through human bodies?

Students: Wow! What has happened, Mr Thamponna? Are you all right? Surely, as a single man and the founder of a temple 🛕, you must have no troubles of your own!

Mr Thamponna: Don’t you think the alphabet must first be organised before we can write a book? 📕

Student: Pardon me, sir! I don’t quite understand your point.

Mr Thamponna: All right, let me explain. Association and cooperation are essential guidelines for accomplishing any project. Just as letters form words and words form chapters in a book, people can come together to build something meaningful. My humble service to the Kurinchikumaran Temple is just one chapter in the greater story of life.

Students: We appreciate your humble service, Mr Thamponna!

Student: Our parents always tell us that most people spend their precious lives living like ordinary people, without discovering their greater purpose.

Mr Thamponna: Excellent! Let us begin our subject, Peter.

Peter: We are sorry to interrupt, sir, but my grandfather said that this subject is related to science.

Mr Thamponna: Certainly, Peter!

Scene 2: Why Are We Here?

Students: We would like you to explain something, Mr Thamponna. Why do you risk your life by working so hard for others?

Mr Thamponna: Sam, should the soul take on a human body merely to live an ordinary life?

Sam: Sorry, sir! Have you watched a football match recently? 🏈

Mr Thamponna: If everyone did nothing but follow the same pursuits, wouldn’t we miss something important?

Sam: But football is the goal of life for some people, sir!

Mr Thamponna: Oh, I see! You remind me of someone in Canada! Ha, ha! If playing football were the ultimate goal of life, why would the soul need a human body? Couldn’t it experience life in the form of a bird 🦢 or a wild animal? Ha, ha!

Student: Please, no philosophy for me, sir! Life is meant to be enjoyed, not to bring an end to our enjoyment!

Mr Thamponna: Look at that! Each of you has a different perspective, dear students.

Students: All right, then! What is your perspective, Mr Thamponna?

Mr Thamponna: We have been designed with wonderful abilities and given the precious gift of human life for higher purposes. We should not invest all our time in football, entertainment, or material pursuits alone.

Student: That sounds as though diamonds 💎 are raining down upon a crowd of crowned kings!

Mr Thamponna: Thank you, dear students! The purpose behind all our purposes is to discover the glory of life through our Fabulous Faculty of Family Stories—by exploring our ancestors, their histories, their actions, and the lessons they leave behind.

Sarah: Oh! So it is not merely about discovering food to feed ourselves?

Mr Thamponna: Exactly, Sarah! Each of us carries precious inner qualities, like valuable gems 💎, that enable us to direct our lives. Discovering the Supreme Engineer behind this wonderful creation is part of our divine quest.

Student: So our purpose is not simply to hunt for prey, like other species?

Students: 👏👏👏

Mr Thamponna: Well, certain nocturnal creatures possess remarkable abilities that help them hunt in the darkness.

Sam: Oh, you mean creatures that use a special inner instrument to locate their food?

Mr Thamponna: Precisely, Sam! Nature has equipped different creatures with different abilities. But we human beings have also been given the opportunity to enquire into the deeper meaning of our existence.

Scene 3: A Family Mystery Emerges

Students: We would like to hear more about the parents of those doctor siblings, sir.

Mr Thamponna: Pardon me? Who are you talking about?

Student: Mrs Meena, sir—the wife of an executive director in Colombo.

Mr Thamponna: How did you know about her, Ruby?

Ruby: My grandmother told me, sir.

Student: Are we talking about Mrs Meena Jeyaratna’s relatives?

Ruby: Yes! When you reminded us of the higher purpose of humanity, we remembered their family story.

Mr Thamponna: I wonder what you are about to tell us!

Students: Our grandfather told us that the doctors’ biological parents died when they were young. Their three children were left helpless. Their mother’s biological sister promised to care for them as though they were her own children.

Student: But unfortunately, she later changed her mind and treated them badly. Why didn’t you tell us that, Mr Thamponna?

Another student: Exactly, sir! A biography should include all the facts, not just the pleasant ones.

Mr Thamponna: Hold on, please! Ha, ha! You always want to uncover the negative side of everything!

Students: Why do you always tell us the positive side and leave out the negative side, sir?

Mr Thamponna: My apologies, dear children! I did not want to upset you by discussing painful family experiences. Is that a crime? Ha, ha!

Students: We don’t mind, Mr Thamponna. After all, you are still learning to write these family stories, aren’t you?

Mr Thamponna: To be fair, dear children, I used to write for a monthly magazine.

Students: Really? We never knew that! Was it a few years ago? Perhaps it was discontinued?

Student: What was the magazine called?

Mr Thamponna: Subatharisanam.

Student: Does that mean something like “ever-present vision,” sir?

Mr Thamponna: I think so, but we should find reliable evidence before deciding on its exact meaning.

Students: Evidence, please! 🙏

Mr Thamponna: Why not? Perhaps I can try to find an old copy of the magazine.

Student: So your hobby is helping people and encouraging cooperation, rather than spending all your time watching television dramas, gossiping, or knitting! Ha, ha!

Mr Thamponna: Ha, ha! Rudra, please have a look outside and see whether it is raining! ☔

Scene 4: The Orphans Who Refused to Give Up

Mr Thamponna: All right, children. Although the doctors’ biological parents came from a wealthy family, they were not blessed with long lives. Their children lost them during their early years.

Student: Yes, sir! Our grandmother told us that Anusha and Thilakrajah worked harder and harder to become doctors.

Students: 👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏

Mr Thamponna: Yes. Their determination reminds us that hardship does not necessarily destroy our future. Sometimes, it becomes the very ground in which our strength grows.

Christina: Excuse me, sir. What does it mean when people say, “Life contains the seed of death, and death contains the seed of life”?

Mr Thamponna: Try to understand the extraordinary blessing we have received in the form of human life, dear students.

Christina: Could you explain it a little more, please?

Student: We also heard that the children’s maternal aunt promised her younger sister, Somoney, that she would raise the children as her own. But later, she treated them like servants.

Mr Thamponna: Ruby, who told you that? Is this a true family story?

Ruby: My grandmother, sir.

Mr Thamponna: Then I would love to meet your grandmother one day, Ruby!

Student: There is something mysterious about this family. Although their father was an engineer, the children experienced great hardship. We even heard a story about them travelling by boat during a storm! ☔

Students: Really? What a shame!

Mr Thamponna: These stories remind us that wealth, education, and social position cannot protect us from every hardship in life.

Student: Exactly, sir! Our lives should not be concerned only with eating, mating, defending ourselves, competing with others, and caring for our own children. Surely, human life has a greater purpose.

Christina: So, when we ask whether life contains the seed of death and death contains the seed of life, we are asking about something beyond our present existence?

Mr Thamponna: Very well understood, Christina! We should learn and earn, care for one another, and fulfil our responsibilities. But we should also enquire into the spiritual purpose of life and what may lie beyond death.

Christina: Thank you, Mr Thamponna!

Student: Now we understand! We should not study only the physical body, as medical doctors and scientists do. We should also enquire into the Supreme and the spiritual self within.

Students: 👏👏👏👏

Student: As Mother Teresa is often remembered as teaching us through her service, divine love must be expressed through our actions. We are like wires through which power flows; the power itself is greater than the wire.

Students: 💕💕💕💕

Scene 5: The Parents, the Princess, and the Family Tree

Students: Please continue telling us about the doctors’ family, sir!

Mr Thamponna: Their family belonged to an aristocratic background. Sadly, both of their biological parents died when they were young.

Students: Our grandparents are interested in knowing exactly who the doctors’ father was.

Mr Thamponna: Excellent! Let me ask you something first. Does anyone remember the father of the princess whose household employed more than 300 people?

Sam: We remember him! He came from Kaladdi, and his name was Srinivasan. His daughter’s wedding was celebrated like a princess’s wedding.

Mr Thamponna: Excellent, Sam! You are referring to Devyani, who died at the age of 27, aren’t you?

Student: Yes, sir! We remember that she was carried in the traditional manner associated with royal processions in the past.

Mr Thamponna: A remarkable memory! And Devyani had a sister, too, who married one of the men described in our family accounts as a stepfather or uncle.

Students: That is what our grandparents told us, sir.

Student: Do you mean that Devyani’s sister also died at a young age?

Mr Thamponna: Sadly, yes. She died at the age of 28.

Student: Just like Mr Sathasivampillai’s remarkable wife, our princess?

Mr Thamponna: There is a resemblance in their early deaths. However, the circumstances surrounding their husbands were different.

Student: Why, sir?

Mr Thamponna: Mr Sathasivampillai devoted himself to caring for his children, including his stepson, even when doing so demanded great personal sacrifice.

Mary: What a wonderful gentleman he must have been!

Mr Thamponna: I am proud to say that he was our grandfather, dear students! Ha, ha!

Students: What a sacred soul! 🙏

Scene 6: DNA, Personality, and Karma

Student: Excuse me, sir. Are our DNA 🧬 and our inherited characteristics distinctly different because of the way we are formed during pregnancy?

Mr Thamponna: That is an interesting scientific question. Our genes contribute to many of our inherited characteristics, and every person has a distinctive genetic combination. But we must also consider the influence of upbringing, environment, education, and personal experience.

Students: Is that true, Mr Thamponna?

Mr Thamponna: Absolutely! Genetics is a fascinating field of science, dear children. It helps us understand why members of the same family may share certain traits while also being very different from one another.

Student: So Devyani’s sister died at the age of 28?

Mr Thamponna: That is correct. According to our family account, her husband married another woman soon afterwards.

Student: Sir, does that mean our personalities have been divinely designed through our DNA?

Mr Thamponna: Let us look at it from two perspectives, children. Science investigates heredity, the body, and the influences that shape our behaviour. Spiritual philosophy invites us to reflect on responsibility, the consequences of our actions, and the deeper purpose of existence.

Students: 🙏🙏🙏

Mr Thamponna: In Hindu philosophy, the principle of karma teaches that our actions have consequences. We should therefore act thoughtfully and compassionately, rather than assuming that we can escape responsibility for what we do.

Student: Do you mean that our present circumstances are connected with the karma of our previous lives?

Mr Thamponna: That is one interpretation found in Hindu spiritual traditions. However, we should not assume that every illness, disability, or early death is a punishment for someone’s past actions. Medical conditions have biological and environmental causes that science seeks to understand.

Students: So we have been shaped by our inherited genes, our family environment, and our life experiences, while karma offers a spiritual way to reflect on our actions?

Mr Thamponna: Precisely! Let us appreciate both scientific enquiry and spiritual wisdom without confusing one with the other.

Scene 7: Marriage, Loss, and the Mystery of Ancestry

Students: We agree, sir! We would love to have ancestors like Mr Sapapathipillai, your great-grandfather! Ha, ha!

Mr Thamponna: I wonder why, Sam?

Sam: Because not everyone wishes to marry again immediately after losing a beloved partner.

Mr Thamponna: A thoughtful observation, Peter! People respond to bereavement in different ways. Some remain single, while others eventually marry again. Wealth alone does not determine such decisions.

Student: Then what influences a person’s decision to marry again, sir?

Mr Thamponna: Many things, including personal character, family responsibilities, emotional needs, social circumstances, and individual beliefs. Our genes may influence certain aspects of behaviour, but they do not determine every decision we make.

Students: Now, please come to the point, sir! Who were the doctors’ parents?

Mr Thamponna: According to the family history we are exploring, their grandfather married again after the death of his first wife, who was connected to the family of Mr Srinivasan of Kaladdi.

Student: Oh! We heard that she also passed away.

Mr Thamponna: That is right, Renuka. And, according to our account, the grandfather eventually married a third wife.

Students: And the doctors were the children of his third wife?

Mr Thamponna: That is the family connection we have been discussing, dear children. We must carefully establish each relationship and verify the details as we continue tracing the family tree.

Scene 8: Until Our Next Lesson

Mr Thamponna: Time is up, everyone! Please pack up, and we shall pick up where we left off next time.

Students: Thank you so much, Mr Thamponna!

Mr Thamponna: Ha, ha! You may call me Mr Subatharisanam if you like!

Students: Ha, ha, ha!

Everyone: Hare Krishna! 🪔🙏

🌳 The Fabulous Family Tree

M. Thamponna : Pardon ? De qui parlez-vous ?

Un élève : De Mme Meena, monsieur, l’épouse d’un directeur exécutif à Colombo.

M. Thamponna : Comment as-tu appris cela, Ruby ?

Ruby : Ma grand-mère me l’a raconté, monsieur.

M. Thamponna : Je me demande pourquoi, Sam !

Tous : Hare Krishna ! 🪔🙏
