Episode 249
🌳 The Fabulous Family Tree
The Purpose of Human Life — From Family History to Supreme Science 🪔
The Universal University — Divine Education Through Everyday Life
Scene 1: Wake Up, Dear Students!
Mr Thamponna: Hey there, dear students! Wake up! Have a wonderful day, everyone! Isn’t it a miracle that our sacred souls have been given the opportunity to experience life through human bodies?
Students: Wow! What has happened, Mr Thamponna? Are you all right? Surely, as a single man and the founder of a temple 🛕, you must have no troubles of your own!
Mr Thamponna: Don’t you think the alphabet must first be organised before we can write a book? 📕
Student: Pardon me, sir! I don’t quite understand your point.
Mr Thamponna: All right, let me explain. Association and cooperation are essential guidelines for accomplishing any project. Just as letters form words and words form chapters in a book, people can come together to build something meaningful. My humble service to the Kurinchikumaran Temple is just one chapter in the greater story of life.
Students: We appreciate your humble service, Mr Thamponna!
Student: Our parents always tell us that most people spend their precious lives living like ordinary people, without discovering their greater purpose.
Mr Thamponna: Excellent! Let us begin our subject, Peter.
Peter: We are sorry to interrupt, sir, but my grandfather said that this subject is related to science.
Mr Thamponna: Certainly, Peter!
Scene 2: Why Are We Here?
Students: We would like you to explain something, Mr Thamponna. Why do you risk your life by working so hard for others?
Mr Thamponna: Sam, should the soul take on a human body merely to live an ordinary life?
Sam: Sorry, sir! Have you watched a football match recently? 🏈
Mr Thamponna: If everyone did nothing but follow the same pursuits, wouldn’t we miss something important?
Sam: But football is the goal of life for some people, sir!
Mr Thamponna: Oh, I see! You remind me of someone in Canada! Ha, ha! If playing football were the ultimate goal of life, why would the soul need a human body? Couldn’t it experience life in the form of a bird 🦢 or a wild animal? Ha, ha!
Student: Please, no philosophy for me, sir! Life is meant to be enjoyed, not to bring an end to our enjoyment!
Mr Thamponna: Look at that! Each of you has a different perspective, dear students.
Students: All right, then! What is your perspective, Mr Thamponna?
Mr Thamponna: We have been designed with wonderful abilities and given the precious gift of human life for higher purposes. We should not invest all our time in football, entertainment, or material pursuits alone.
Student: That sounds as though diamonds 💎 are raining down upon a crowd of crowned kings!
Mr Thamponna: Thank you, dear students! The purpose behind all our purposes is to discover the glory of life through our Fabulous Faculty of Family Stories—by exploring our ancestors, their histories, their actions, and the lessons they leave behind.
Sarah: Oh! So it is not merely about discovering food to feed ourselves?
Mr Thamponna: Exactly, Sarah! Each of us carries precious inner qualities, like valuable gems 💎, that enable us to direct our lives. Discovering the Supreme Engineer behind this wonderful creation is part of our divine quest.
Student: So our purpose is not simply to hunt for prey, like other species?
Students: 👏👏👏
Mr Thamponna: Well, certain nocturnal creatures possess remarkable abilities that help them hunt in the darkness.
Sam: Oh, you mean creatures that use a special inner instrument to locate their food?
Mr Thamponna: Precisely, Sam! Nature has equipped different creatures with different abilities. But we human beings have also been given the opportunity to enquire into the deeper meaning of our existence.
Scene 3: A Family Mystery Emerges
Students: We would like to hear more about the parents of those doctor siblings, sir.
Mr Thamponna: Pardon me? Who are you talking about?
Student: Mrs Meena, sir—the wife of an executive director in Colombo.
Mr Thamponna: How did you know about her, Ruby?
Ruby: My grandmother told me, sir.
Student: Are we talking about Mrs Meena Jeyaratna’s relatives?
Ruby: Yes! When you reminded us of the higher purpose of humanity, we remembered their family story.
Mr Thamponna: I wonder what you are about to tell us!
Students: Our grandfather told us that the doctors’ biological parents died when they were young. Their three children were left helpless. Their mother’s biological sister promised to care for them as though they were her own children.
Student: But unfortunately, she later changed her mind and treated them badly. Why didn’t you tell us that, Mr Thamponna?
Another student: Exactly, sir! A biography should include all the facts, not just the pleasant ones.
Mr Thamponna: Hold on, please! Ha, ha! You always want to uncover the negative side of everything!
Students: Why do you always tell us the positive side and leave out the negative side, sir?
Mr Thamponna: My apologies, dear children! I did not want to upset you by discussing painful family experiences. Is that a crime? Ha, ha!
Students: We don’t mind, Mr Thamponna. After all, you are still learning to write these family stories, aren’t you?
Mr Thamponna: To be fair, dear children, I used to write for a monthly magazine.
Students: Really? We never knew that! Was it a few years ago? Perhaps it was discontinued?
Student: What was the magazine called?
Mr Thamponna: Subatharisanam.
Student: Does that mean something like “ever-present vision,” sir?
Mr Thamponna: I think so, but we should find reliable evidence before deciding on its exact meaning.
Students: Evidence, please! 🙏
Mr Thamponna: Why not? Perhaps I can try to find an old copy of the magazine.
Student: So your hobby is helping people and encouraging cooperation, rather than spending all your time watching television dramas, gossiping, or knitting! Ha, ha!
Mr Thamponna: Ha, ha! Rudra, please have a look outside and see whether it is raining! ☔
Scene 4: The Orphans Who Refused to Give Up
Mr Thamponna: All right, children. Although the doctors’ biological parents came from a wealthy family, they were not blessed with long lives. Their children lost them during their early years.
Student: Yes, sir! Our grandmother told us that Anusha and Thilakrajah worked harder and harder to become doctors.
Students: 👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏
Mr Thamponna: Yes. Their determination reminds us that hardship does not necessarily destroy our future. Sometimes, it becomes the very ground in which our strength grows.
Christina: Excuse me, sir. What does it mean when people say, “Life contains the seed of death, and death contains the seed of life”?
Mr Thamponna: Try to understand the extraordinary blessing we have received in the form of human life, dear students.
Christina: Could you explain it a little more, please?
Student: We also heard that the children’s maternal aunt promised her younger sister, Somoney, that she would raise the children as her own. But later, she treated them like servants.
Mr Thamponna: Ruby, who told you that? Is this a true family story?
Ruby: My grandmother, sir.
Mr Thamponna: Then I would love to meet your grandmother one day, Ruby!
Student: There is something mysterious about this family. Although their father was an engineer, the children experienced great hardship. We even heard a story about them travelling by boat during a storm! ☔
Students: Really? What a shame!
Mr Thamponna: These stories remind us that wealth, education, and social position cannot protect us from every hardship in life.
Student: Exactly, sir! Our lives should not be concerned only with eating, mating, defending ourselves, competing with others, and caring for our own children. Surely, human life has a greater purpose.
Christina: So, when we ask whether life contains the seed of death and death contains the seed of life, we are asking about something beyond our present existence?
Mr Thamponna: Very well understood, Christina! We should learn and earn, care for one another, and fulfil our responsibilities. But we should also enquire into the spiritual purpose of life and what may lie beyond death.
Christina: Thank you, Mr Thamponna!
Student: Now we understand! We should not study only the physical body, as medical doctors and scientists do. We should also enquire into the Supreme and the spiritual self within.
Students: 👏👏👏👏
Student: As Mother Teresa is often remembered as teaching us through her service, divine love must be expressed through our actions. We are like wires through which power flows; the power itself is greater than the wire.
Students: 💕💕💕💕
Scene 5: The Parents, the Princess, and the Family Tree
Students: Please continue telling us about the doctors’ family, sir!
Mr Thamponna: Their family belonged to an aristocratic background. Sadly, both of their biological parents died when they were young.
Students: Our grandparents are interested in knowing exactly who the doctors’ father was.
Mr Thamponna: Excellent! Let me ask you something first. Does anyone remember the father of the princess whose household employed more than 300 people?
Sam: We remember him! He came from Kaladdi, and his name was Srinivasan. His daughter’s wedding was celebrated like a princess’s wedding.
Mr Thamponna: Excellent, Sam! You are referring to Devyani, who died at the age of 27, aren’t you?
Student: Yes, sir! We remember that she was carried in the traditional manner associated with royal processions in the past.
Mr Thamponna: A remarkable memory! And Devyani had a sister, too, who married one of the men described in our family accounts as a stepfather or uncle.
Students: That is what our grandparents told us, sir.
Student: Do you mean that Devyani’s sister also died at a young age?
Mr Thamponna: Sadly, yes. She died at the age of 28.
Student: Just like Mr Sathasivampillai’s remarkable wife, our princess?
Mr Thamponna: There is a resemblance in their early deaths. However, the circumstances surrounding their husbands were different.
Student: Why, sir?
Mr Thamponna: Mr Sathasivampillai devoted himself to caring for his children, including his stepson, even when doing so demanded great personal sacrifice.
Mary: What a wonderful gentleman he must have been!
Mr Thamponna: I am proud to say that he was our grandfather, dear students! Ha, ha!
Students: What a sacred soul! 🙏
Scene 6: DNA, Personality, and Karma
Student: Excuse me, sir. Are our DNA 🧬 and our inherited characteristics distinctly different because of the way we are formed during pregnancy?
Mr Thamponna: That is an interesting scientific question. Our genes contribute to many of our inherited characteristics, and every person has a distinctive genetic combination. But we must also consider the influence of upbringing, environment, education, and personal experience.
Students: Is that true, Mr Thamponna?
Mr Thamponna: Absolutely! Genetics is a fascinating field of science, dear children. It helps us understand why members of the same family may share certain traits while also being very different from one another.
Student: So Devyani’s sister died at the age of 28?
Mr Thamponna: That is correct. According to our family account, her husband married another woman soon afterwards.
Student: Sir, does that mean our personalities have been divinely designed through our DNA?
Mr Thamponna: Let us look at it from two perspectives, children. Science investigates heredity, the body, and the influences that shape our behaviour. Spiritual philosophy invites us to reflect on responsibility, the consequences of our actions, and the deeper purpose of existence.
Students: 🙏🙏🙏
Mr Thamponna: In Hindu philosophy, the principle of karma teaches that our actions have consequences. We should therefore act thoughtfully and compassionately, rather than assuming that we can escape responsibility for what we do.
Student: Do you mean that our present circumstances are connected with the karma of our previous lives?
Mr Thamponna: That is one interpretation found in Hindu spiritual traditions. However, we should not assume that every illness, disability, or early death is a punishment for someone’s past actions. Medical conditions have biological and environmental causes that science seeks to understand.
Students: So we have been shaped by our inherited genes, our family environment, and our life experiences, while karma offers a spiritual way to reflect on our actions?
Mr Thamponna: Precisely! Let us appreciate both scientific enquiry and spiritual wisdom without confusing one with the other.
Scene 7: Marriage, Loss, and the Mystery of Ancestry
Students: We agree, sir! We would love to have ancestors like Mr Sapapathipillai, your great-grandfather! Ha, ha!
Mr Thamponna: I wonder why, Sam?
Sam: Because not everyone wishes to marry again immediately after losing a beloved partner.
Mr Thamponna: A thoughtful observation, Peter! People respond to bereavement in different ways. Some remain single, while others eventually marry again. Wealth alone does not determine such decisions.
Student: Then what influences a person’s decision to marry again, sir?
Mr Thamponna: Many things, including personal character, family responsibilities, emotional needs, social circumstances, and individual beliefs. Our genes may influence certain aspects of behaviour, but they do not determine every decision we make.
Students: Now, please come to the point, sir! Who were the doctors’ parents?
Mr Thamponna: According to the family history we are exploring, their grandfather married again after the death of his first wife, who was connected to the family of Mr Srinivasan of Kaladdi.
Student: Oh! We heard that she also passed away.
Mr Thamponna: That is right, Renuka. And, according to our account, the grandfather eventually married a third wife.
Students: And the doctors were the children of his third wife?
Mr Thamponna: That is the family connection we have been discussing, dear children. We must carefully establish each relationship and verify the details as we continue tracing the family tree.
Scene 8: Until Our Next Lesson
Mr Thamponna: Time is up, everyone! Please pack up, and we shall pick up where we left off next time.
Students: Thank you so much, Mr Thamponna!
Mr Thamponna: Ha, ha! You may call me Mr Subatharisanam if you like!
Students: Ha, ha, ha!
Everyone: Hare Krishna! 🪔🙏
🌳 The Fabulous Family Tree
M. Thamponna : Pardon ? De qui parlez-vous ?
Un élève : De Mme Meena, monsieur, l’épouse d’un directeur exécutif à Colombo.
M. Thamponna : Comment as-tu appris cela, Ruby ?
Ruby : Ma grand-mère me l’a raconté, monsieur.
M. Thamponna : Je me demande pourquoi, Sam !
Tous : Hare Krishna ! 🪔🙏
