Episode 206

🌳 The Golden Branch of the Family Tree

A Lesson Beneath the Ancient Banyan Tree 🪔

The afternoon sun was slowly descending behind the distant hills. A gentle golden light spread across the garden, touching the leaves of an enormous ancient banyan tree.

The students sat quietly beneath its branches.

A small temple bell could be heard in the distance.

The atmosphere was unusually peaceful—as though even Nature herself had come to listen.

Sam:

“Hello 🙋‍♂️ sir!

We’re impatient to hear the rest of the Family Tree!”

Teacher:

“Then I am delighted to deliver another branch of the family root.”

The students leaned forward eagerly.

Sam:

“We wish we could see a picture of the gentleman called Mr. Sapapathipillai.”

Teacher:

“To be honest, we don’t possess that kind of old gold.

A photograph from those days would be a precious treasure indeed.”

Meera:

“We love ❤️ him because he was pretty bold. He stood against the destruction of the temples during the time when the Portuguese were destroying temples.”

The teacher paused for a moment and looked towards the old temple in the distance.

Teacher:

“Indeed.

Mr. Thamponna himself was enthusiastic to see what this remarkable ancestor looked like. So he spoke with one of the elders of the family.

The elder remembered him and described him by showing one of his brothers.”

Sam:

“Could you share one of his photographs?”

Teacher:

“With the greatest pleasure—if such an ancient photograph could still be found.”

Sam:

“What was his brother’s name?”

Teacher:

“Guna.”

Sam:

“Guna?

Like the three Gunas—Sattvic, Tamasic and Rajasic?”

The teacher smiled.

Teacher:

“An excellent connection!

But his actual name was Gunalan.”

Sam:

“What does Gunalan mean?”

The teacher looked around at the students.

Teacher:

“That is one of the greatest questions, Sam.”

He slowly wrote the word on the board:

GUNALAN — गुणालन्

Teacher:

“In Sanskrit, the name is associated with one who possesses noble qualities, virtue and an admirable character.

It evokes the idea of a person growing with righteousness, good qualities, dignity and a generous heart. ❤️”

The students listened silently.

Meera:

“What was his complexion, sir?”

Teacher:

“He was remembered as having a fair or golden complexion.”

Sam:

“Did he have children?”

Teacher:

“Of course.

He had six children.”

The students looked at one another in astonishment.

Sam:

“But how was that possible if he could not marry his beloved Angel?”

The teacher raised his hand gently.

Teacher:

“Calm down, children.

Let me unfold this part of the story slowly.”

The wind moved through the banyan leaves.

Teacher:

“His beloved beauty was deeply devoted to Lord Pillaiyar.

She would often go to the Pillaiyar Temple and approach Him with great humility and devotion.”

Meera:

“But what about the children if there was no woman beside him?”

The teacher smiled gently.

Teacher:

“Ah…

Now you have reached one of the most fascinating chapters of this man’s life.

He was perhaps one of the most unusual men you could ever meet—a man who learned to live alone.”

Sam:

“But why, sir?

Why would anyone choose such a lonely life?”

The teacher became quiet for a moment.

Teacher:

“Sometimes, children, a heart that has been shattered by love makes a strange decision.

It decides to rebuild itself—

brick by brick.

Not because it hates the world…

but because it has learned that it must first find itself.”

The students became completely silent.

Even the birds seemed quieter.

Meera:

“So… so sorry for him, sir.”

Teacher:

“That feeling is called humanity, Meera.”

Meera:

“I think I understand him now.

A man who has walked through experiences that stripped him down until he felt he had nothing left…

may eventually discover the deepest truths about himself—and about the world.”

The teacher nodded appreciatively.

Teacher:

“Beautifully expressed, Meera.”

Meera:

“And when he felt disrespected, his mind slowly detached itself from worldly attachment…

like a drop of water resting upon a lotus leaf. 💧🌿

It touches the leaf…

but does not become one with it.”

The teacher’s face lit up.

Teacher:

“What a wonderful student you are, Meera!

That is a beautiful image.”

He turned towards the students.

Teacher:

“His worship-like relationship with the Divine gradually turned his mind away from ordinary worldly attachments and towards the Lord and the spiritual purpose of life.”

Sam:

“And then, sir?”

Teacher:

“Eventually, people around him began to understand his unusual and poetic way of living.

Rather than judging him, they became sympathetic towards his life.”

Meera:

“That is so sweet to hear, sir.”

Teacher:

“They eventually proposed a wonderful woman to him—someone who understood his circumstances and showed sympathy towards him.”

The students exchanged excited glances.

Sam:

“Amazing!

Now we understand!

So the children were born from their union?”

Teacher:

“That is correct.”

Sam:

“It’s crazy, sir!”

The teacher laughed softly.

Teacher:

“Perhaps it sounds strange when we hear it from the outside.

But remember, children—

we are all living under the influence of Maya and Karma.

Yet, when life gives us unexpected blessings, the proper response is not pride.

It is gratitude. 🙏”

The temple bell rang again in the distance.

The students remained completely still.

The teacher looked up through the branches of the ancient banyan tree.

Teacher:

“And that, my dear students…

is why a family tree is not merely a list of names.

Behind every name there is a human heart.

Behind every branch there is a story.

Behind every story there are joys, wounds, choices, karma, devotion…

and sometimes—

a blessing that nobody could have predicted.”

The students looked at the enormous tree above them.

Its branches stretched in every direction.

Meera whispered:

“Sir…

perhaps our ancestors were also branches trying to find the light.”

The teacher smiled.

Teacher:

“Exactly, Meera.

And now…

shall we continue to discover what happened to the next branch?”

The students answered together:

“YES, SIR!” 🌳❤️🪔

Sam :

« Quel était le nom de son frère ? »

Le professeur :

« Guna. »

Sam :

« Guna ?

Comme les trois Gunas — Sattva, Tamas et Rajas ? »

Le professeur sourit.

Le professeur :

« Magnifique association, Sam !

Mais son véritable nom était Gunalan. »

Sam :

« Que signifie Gunalan ? »

Le professeur regarda ses élèves.

Le professeur :

« Voilà une excellente question, Sam. »

Il écrivit lentement le nom au tableau :

GUNALAN — गुणालन्

« OUI, MONSIEUR ! » 🌳❤️🪔
