Episode 207

The Family Tree Lesson — The Three Modes of Nature

“What’s up?”

Welcome back, my dear, stunning students! 🌅

The classroom seemed to come alive again. Sunlight streamed through the windows, touching the old photographs and turning them golden. Somewhere in the distance, temple bells chimed softly, while the gentle fragrance of jasmine and burning incense floated through the air.

“We are interested to know what kind of work Mr. Sabapathipillai did, because the author doesn’t talk about it!”

“Oh my goodness! Listen carefully, dear learners. The author does not give us every single detail. Perhaps he assumes that we are educated enough to read between the lines.

So, my sweethearts, we have to investigate!”

“What? How?”

“Very simply.

For example, when the author describes Mr. Velluppillai as a man of extraordinary brilliance, we should pause and ask ourselves:

‘What kind of profession could have required such ability?’”

The students leaned forward.

“And what was his profession?”

“He was an entrepreneur on a massive scale—operating in the world of wealth and investment, rather like stocks and bonds today.”

The room suddenly became animated.

“Who was Mr. Sabapathipillai, Sam?”

Sam jumped up proudly.

“He was the only son of a multi-millionaire!”

👏👏👏👏

“Exactly!

Now, children, let me ask you something.

Would the only son of a wealthy millionaire normally depend upon an ordinary job simply to survive?”

The students burst into laughter.

“Nooooo!”

“Exactly! Shame on us if we think so!

If that had been the case, how could he have possessed the resources and vision to construct such a magnificent temple for the woman he loved?

And more importantly, wouldn’t a man of such wealth have had the capacity to employ hundreds of people?”

The students nodded thoughtfully.

Then the conversation took a deeper turn.

“But here comes the fascinating question:

How do we understand all this through the THREE MODES OF MATERIAL NATURE?

Doesn’t Vedic teaching give us an extraordinary framework for understanding human behaviour—even among people of great wealth, education, power and influence?”

Meera’s eyes sparkled.

“So, in this family tree, the writer is actually describing the three modes of material nature through the activities of the characters?”

“Enchanting!

Excellent effort, Meera! 👏

Now we are beginning to read the family tree not merely as a list of ancestors, but as a living classroom of human nature.”

The teacher slowly wrote three words on the board:

SATTVA — RAJAS — TAMAS

“First:

Sattva — goodness, clarity, wisdom and knowledge.

And who gives us evidence of this?”

The students answered together:

“Mr. Kantha!”

👏👏👏

“Very good!

His learning, his teaching and his dedication to spiritual knowledge give us a glimpse of the sattvic mode.”

Sam raised his hand enthusiastically.

“Rajas — passion, ambition, restless activity and desire. That sounds like Mr. Sabapathipillai!”

🤙🤙🤙

“Encouraging, Sam!

You are beginning to see the pattern.”

Peter suddenly interrupted.

“And Tamas — darkness, ignorance, inertia and destructive tendencies — could be represented by the person who ignored his broken-hearted Pillaiyar temple!”

The classroom fell silent for a moment.

Then the teacher smiled.

“Stupendous observation, Peter.”

A faint breeze moved through the room, carrying with it the scent of flowers from the temple garden.

“Remember, children, however, these modes are not simply labels for ‘good people’ and ‘bad people’. Vedic philosophy presents them as qualities that influence human thought, motivation and action.

And sometimes the same person may display different qualities at different moments.”

The students listened carefully.

“Now, let’s look for evidence.

For example, we have a temple.

And beside that temple, something remarkable happened.”

The students became curious.

“What?”

“His highly educated elder brother was not merely learning the Vedas himself. He was educating others about them.

And next to his temple, another building was constructed.

You might think it was a wedding hall…”

The students laughed.

“A wedding hall?!”

“Yes!

But it wasn’t really built for weddings.”

The teacher paused dramatically.

“It became a place where highly educated and saintly teachers were engaged to teach the Vedas and Kanthapuranam.”

“What was the name of the hall?”

“Kanthapurana Madam.”

“Why was it given that name, sir? And what does it mean?”

“Brilliant question!

The name reflects the purpose of the place: saintly and learned people gathered there to teach Kanthapuranam, the sacred Tamil account associated with Lord Murugan, also known as Kanthan.”

The students looked at one another in amazement.

“Unbelievable! Does the building still exist?”

“Yes, children.

Both the temple and the hall are still standing.”

A wave of excitement passed through the classroom.

“What was his name again?”

“Kanthar.”

The students smiled.

“Wow! Every name seems to complement the person’s actions so beautifully!”

“Exactly!

And now we come to another question.”

“When was he born?”

“1825.”

“Where was he born?”

The teacher raised an eyebrow.

“Shut up! 😂😂😂

The author has deliberately left the learners a little mystery here.

That is the beauty of historical investigation.

When the evidence is silent, we should not manufacture an answer. We should leave the question open.”

The students laughed.

“Then when was the Wedding Hall constructed?”

“1846.”

A few students looked astonished.

“What was he doing for a living?”

The teacher smiled.

“Obviously, children, he was a wealthy businessman.

Managing extensive properties, collecting rents and dealing with the produce of acres of coconut lands would hardly have been an ordinary occupation for him.

In fact, for a man of his resources, even managing such wealth could have been a headache!”

The students laughed again.

“Really?”

“Absolutely!

And there is something even more remarkable.

The government appointed him as the DR Officer in that region.”

The classroom erupted.

“Sir! Could you stop exaggerating?!” 😂

The teacher laughed.

“Alright, alright!

I can see that you have had enough historical detective work for today!”

The students gathered their books, still talking excitedly.

“Remember, children:

A family tree is not merely a collection of names, dates and relationships.

Look at the buildings.

Look at the professions.

Look at the choices.

Look at the service.

Look at the ambitions.

Look at the devotion.

And then ask:

‘What do these actions reveal about the human nature of the people who came before us?’

That is when history begins to breathe.

That is when an old temple becomes a teacher.

That is when a forgotten hall becomes a classroom.

And that is when the family tree becomes a living laboratory for understanding human nature, society and the three modes of material nature.”

The final temple bell sounded in the distance. 🔔

The fragrance of jasmine drifted through the warm evening air.

The students smiled.

“See you later, sir!”

“See you, children.

Continue…” 🌳🪔🙏

« À bientôt, mes enfants.

À suivre… 🌳🪔🙏
