Episode 235
Mr and Mrs K. Mayilwaganam — A Wedding Photograph
“Good morning, Mr Family Tree! Ha…ha…!”
God bless you all!
“Excuse me, sir!”
How can I help you, Meera?
“Why didn’t you show us at least one picture of Madam Kanmaniyamal’s husband?”
“Yes, sir. We feel sorry to see her always dressed in white.”
Didn’t I tell you that her husband had passed away, Rudra?
“In any case, sir, you are showing us photographs of so many family members who are no longer with us. Why not show us his picture too? It doesn’t seem fair!”
All right. Mary, have you ever seen a wedding photograph of Mr and Mrs K. Mayilwaganam?
“We have never even heard that mysterious name! Who was he?”
He was a wealthy and handsome young man, and his parents had prayed for sixteen years for the blessing of having him.
“Really?”
Absolutely, Sam!
“What a man! I wish I had been in his place!”
Listen to the whole story first. Don’t jump to conclusions like my lovely wife! Ha…ha…!
“Sorry, sir. We understand. Patience is a good discipline.”
He was educated, but unfortunately, his education was interrupted.
“Why did our parents keep forcing us to study, sir? How could we escape from the torture of education?”
Please listen!
“We’re listening!”
His father passed away when he was only nine years old.
“Oh, we are so sorry to hear that. So he was the only son of a single mother?”
Yes, yes. He was brought up in Vaddukoddai, Jaffna.
“Oh! And he eventually became Kanmaniyamal’s husband?”
That’s right, Renuka.
“What was his name?”
Mayilwaganam.
“Oh my goodness! Where do you find all these mysterious names? Ha…ha…!”
His parents were devoted followers of Lord Murugan, and the name was connected with their devotion.
“In that case, he must have been a handsome man!”
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Peter.
“Sure, sure! We would love to see him. Please!”
No problem. We can show you one of their wedding photographs. Happy?
“Oh dear! What a lovely couple!”
“It seems that many branches of our family tree belonged to prosperous families, but sadly, some of them did not live long enough to enjoy their lives.”
“When was he born?”
In 1916.
“That sounds like the same year Mrs Kanmaniyamal was born, sir!”
Absolutely, Meera.
“What was his father’s profession?”
He was a government employee, much like Kanthar, who was knowledgeable in the Vedas. Do you remember him, Renuka?
“You mean the person after whom Kantharmadam was named?”
Yes.
“Was his father also a famous and devoted man?”
Undoubtedly. His name was Appasamy, and he donated land for a Murugan temple. 🛕
“What was the name of the temple, and where was it?”
I believe it was in Thevidapittiya, Rudra.
“Sir, what was the temple called?”
Murugamoorthy Kovil, Radha.
“How long has that temple existed?”
It was established as early as 1720, Mary.
“So it has existed for about 226 years?”
That is correct—if we are counting from 1946 in this particular family account.
“Did Mr Mayilwaganam live to an old age, or did he die young?”
He lived longer than Mr Sathasivampillai.
“Thank God! How long did he live, please?”
Only about one year longer.
“Are you kidding, sir?”
No. He died at the age of forty-five.
“Who managed the temple responsibilities after his father, Mr Appasamy, passed away?”
His only son, Mayilwaganam—the very man you see in the photograph with his wife.
“Was he also the Tharmakartha during the festival?”
Yes, but specifically in connection with the chariot festival, for about ten years.
“Fantastic! What a fabulous tradition! Our grandparents knew that temple too, sir.”
I’m glad to hear that, Renuka.
Now, shall we stop there, students?
“Our pleasure, sir!”
Thank you. 🙏

Monsieur et Madame K. Mayilwaganam — Une photographie de mariage
« Bonjour, Monsieur l’Arbre Généalogique ! Ha… ha… ! »
Que Dieu vous bénisse tous !
« Excusez-moi, monsieur ! »
