Episode 231

🌳 The Fabulous Family Tree

Episode: The Compassionate Sister of Mr Morris Minor, the Three Gunas & the Temple of the Divine

Good morning 🌅 everyone!

Students:

“Wow! Sir, who is this mysterious gentleman standing in a garden filled with yellow, fragrant flowers, please?” 🙏

Teacher:

“Ha…ha…ha! A madman in a flower garden? Not at all! Let me introduce you to another fascinating branch of our Fabulous Family Tree!”

👵 The Compassionate Sister of Mr Morris Minor

Student:

“Sir, we would love to learn more about the siblings of Mr Morris Minor.”

Teacher:

“Actually, his siblings were older than him, and they were exceptionally kind-hearted.

They did their very best to protect, care for, and support him throughout his life.

Among them, his eldest sister, Kanmanniyama, deserves special mention.”

Student:

“Why does she usually wear a milk-white sari, sir?”

Teacher:

“Because, unfortunately, she lost her husband, Mr Mayilvaganam, at a relatively young age.”

Students:

“Ohhh… my goodness!”

Teacher:

“Her white sari became more than just an item of clothing.

It represented her personal journey through grief, remembrance, dignity, and the life she continued to lead after her beloved husband’s passing.

Her story reminds us that behind every family photograph, there may be a lifetime of love, sacrifice, and silent courage.”

💎 The Three Gunas and Human Character

Student:

“Sir, what about the Three Gunas and human character?”

Teacher:

“Ah! When you mention the word Guna, I am immediately reminded of the beautiful meaning behind the name Gunaratnam.”

Student:

“Who is Gunaratnam, sir?”

Teacher:

“The trainee pilot!”

Student:

“And what does Gunaratnam mean?”

Teacher:

“Let us break the name into two parts:

Guna means quality, virtue, or characteristic.

Ratnam means a precious jewel or gem.

Therefore, poetically, Gunaratnam may be understood as:

‘A precious jewel of noble qualities.’ 💎”

Students:

“Wow! What a beautiful meaning!”

👏👏👏👏

🛕 The Body: A Temple of the Divine

Teacher:

“Now, listen carefully, my lovely students.

Our beautiful bodies are like boats carrying us across the ocean of life.

They are also temples of the Divine—a precious gift and a blessed bridge between our inner spiritual nature and the world around us.”

Student:

“Are you sure, sir?”

Teacher:

“Ha…ha…! According to spiritual teachings, the Divine is present within the heart.

Therefore, caring for our bodies is not merely a matter of appearance.

We should also keep our inner lives clean, fresh, and fragrant—not simply through perfumes, but through noble thoughts, kind words, and righteous actions.”

Sam:

“How, sir?

How can we cleanse our inner selves?

Or are you joking again?”

Teacher:

“What a fascinating question, Sam!

The purification of the inner self begins with humility.

When humility opens the door, knowledge can enter.

When knowledge enters, understanding grows.

And when understanding grows, our thoughts, words, and actions gradually become more compassionate and pure.”

Sam:

“So, sir, inner cleanliness is more important than outward appearance?”

Teacher:

“Precisely, Sam!

A person may wear beautiful clothes and pleasant fragrances, but true beauty shines through a purified heart.”

⚖️ The Three Categories of Human Nature

Student:

“Sir, according to the three categories of human nature described in the Vedas, what kind of Guna might be observed among Mr Morris Minor’s siblings?” 🙏

Teacher:

“An excellent question!

First, let me explain precisely what the Three Gunas are.

According to the Bhagavad Gita, material nature is described through three fundamental qualities, or gunas.”

1. Sattva — Clarity and Harmony

Associated with:

Knowledge and wisdom

Purity and balance

Compassion and kindness

Inner peace and understanding

2. Rajas — Activity and Desire

Associated with:

Ambition and restless activity

Attachment to results

Competition and achievement

Strong desires and constant effort

3. Tamas — Inertia and Confusion

Associated with:

Ignorance and negligence

Confusion and inactivity

Resistance to understanding

Lack of awareness

Teacher:

“These three qualities can influence individuals, institutions, and society.

However, we must be careful not to label an entire population, community, family, or political party as belonging exclusively to one Guna.

Human behaviour is complex.

A person may display Sattva in one situation, Rajas in another, and Tamas at a different time.

Even within the same family, people may express different qualities according to their circumstances, choices, and level of awareness.

Through knowledge, discipline, self-awareness, compassionate conduct, and spiritual development, people can gradually transform their lives.”

Student:

“So, sir, the Gunas describe qualities within human nature rather than permanent labels attached to people?”

Teacher:

“Exactly!

They are useful for self-reflection—not for judging others arrogantly.

The wise person asks:

‘Which qualities am I cultivating within myself today?’”

⏰ Time to Pack Up!

Teacher:

“Unfortunately, my lovely students, time is up!

Shall we pack up now and pick up the rest of our fascinating discussion next time?”

Students:

“That’s a great idea, sir!”

Teacher:

“Wonderful!

Until our next gathering, remember:

Respect your family heritage, purify your heart, and cultivate noble qualities.

Hare Krishna! 🪔”

Students:

“Hare Krishna! 🙏”

Un arbre familial — trois langues — d’innombrables cœurs !

Hare Krishna! 🪔❤
